Training on efficient water measurement in irrigation systems of Armenia-USAID/Armenia improved water management for sustainable economic growth program

Within the framework of USAID/Armenia impoved water management for sustainable economic growh program specialized training courses where conducted for the employees of the Water Committee and 15 Water User Associations of Armenia on 14 and 15 November. These courses are designed to equip the trainees with the skills needed for efficient water measuring in open canals and pressure pipes within the irrigation systems of Armenia.

The primary goal of the training is to conduct water measurements in irrigation systems using state-of-the-art portable water measuring devices recently acquired by the Water Committee. The devices include ultrasonic mobile flowmeters “TUF 2000 H” and «LS 1206B» water flow rate measuring and recording device.The training course was divided into two parts – theoretical and practical. The theoretical part included technical presentation of the devices, materials from various sources, data interpretation, measurement methods, and interactive Q&A sessions.

The practical part was conducted in the field providing hands-on experience with the portable devices. 

The training courses were provided by the program team members: Benyamin Zakaryan – Doctor of Geographical Sciences and Armen Sergoyan – Doctor of Engineering, Associate Professor. 

‼️With increased capacities for using advanced water metering technology, Water User Associations improve water allocation and use monitoring. The capability of using advanced monitoring tool will also increase a decision-making capacity of the Water Committee enabling to ensure a rapid response to the requests of water users as regards water availability, allocation and use and based on the measurements, make evidence-based quality decisions, which will increase trust of water users in Water User Associations services, responsiveness, and transparency of water governance by Water User Associations.  We are enthusiastic about this opportunity for professional development and believe that these courses will significantly contribute to the enhancement of water management practices in Armenia.
